Ion cyclotron heating in TMX-U

Abstract: Ion cyclotron heating (ICH) is applied to TMX-U to improve the thermal barrier performance by reducing the passing ion collisionality. During its development, measurements of the antenna loading resistance, R , and the absorption efficiency, rj, were compared with calculations with the antenna design code ANTENA over a wide range of densities and frequencies. Good agreement in R was obtained in the short wavelength slow wave regime but not for long wavelength fast waves because the experimental magnetic field … Show more

“…The heating and fuelling systems include neutral beam injection, electron cyclotron heating (ECH) [22], ion cyclotron heating (ICH) [23,24], and gas boxes and puffers. The number of neutral beams at each location before June 1986 is given by the first number in parentheses in Fig.…”

“…Its radiation and heating properties are described in Ref. [1]. With 100 kW of power, the passing ion collisionality has been reduced tenfold for plasma densities, n -(1-2) x 10 l2 cm' 3 , characteristic of thermal barrier operation.…”

“…Auxiliary heating has been used in many fusion oriented devices to study particle and energy confinement at higher particle energies, more relevant to the regime of a fusion reactor. In this paper, we present the results of numerical modelling of ion cyclotron heating (ICH) in the centre cell of the Tandem Mirror Experiment Upgrade (TMX-U) [1] at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In TMX-U the goals of ICH were to reduce the number and collisionality of ions passing into the end cell to help prevent collisional filling of the electrostatic thermal barrier and to increase the centre-cell density to improve neutral beam absorption.…”
