Ion Beam Deposition of Calcium Hydroxyapatite

Abstract: Calcium hydroxyapatite has been sputtered on glass and Ti-6Al-4V substrates using a 1.5-kV argon ion beam. The films have been examined by x-ray diffraction analysis, energy dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and adhesion testing. Results of this experimentation are presented.

“…In the past decade or so, a variety of coating techniques have been employed to obtain HA coatings with desirable features, including plasma spraying [5,6], flame spraying [7], radio-frequency magnetron sputtering [8], ion-beam sputtering [9], electrophoretic deposition [10], electrochemical deposition [11] and combinations of these methods. Plasma spraying is the major method commercially available for the production of HA coatings.…”

“…Hydroxyapatite has been extensively used for surface improvement of the metallic implants because it exhibits good biocompatibility with body fluid [2][3][4]. Many methods were used to deposit HA coatings on the metallic implants surfaces such as conventional press-and-sinter method, ion beam sputtering, electrophoretic deposition, rf-magnetron sputtering, pulse laser melting, physical vapor deposition and electrochemical deposition [5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. Thermal spraying processes (e.g.…”
