Iodine status in ewes with the intake of iodine enriched alga Chlorella

Abstract: AbstrAct:The effect of increased intake of iodine at different selenium intake was studied in three groups of lambing ewes consisting of five animals and in their lambs for 76 days (from day 4 to day 80 post partum). Iodine in blood plasma, milk and urine was determined by a modified method according to Sandell-Kolthoff. Mineral supplement contained iodine and selenium in the form of I-or Se-enriched alga Chlorella. The content of iodine and selenium per 1 kg DM of experimental diet was as follows: group G1 0.… Show more

“…(2011) found similar results in Merino sheep in Australia. I in the blood serum of ewes decreased at lambing, as previously reported by Trávníček et al. (2010), probably because of a large transfer of I from the blood serum to mammary glands and milk (Anke, 2004).…”

“…vulgaris has selenium and iodine in enough quantities, which play important roles in human and animal health due to their effect on the formation of glutathione-peroxidase that is important for buffering the destructive effect of peroxidation reactions on living cells (Rayman, 2000). Moreover, both of these elements are important for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism level in the tissues of virtually all mammals (Trávníček et al, 2010). Such content of minerals and vitamins makes C. vulgaris an excellent source of essential micronutrients.…”

“…Selenium is usually added to feed in inorganically or organically bound forms − sodium selenite and selenate vs. selenomethionine, selenium proteinate, lactate-protein selenium complex, seleniumenriched yeast, selenium-enriched alga Chlorella, selenium-enriched alga Scenedesmus quadricauda, dimethylselenonium propionate etc. (Trávníček et al, 2008(Trávníček et al, , 2010Heindl et al, 2010;Skřivan et al, 2010a, b;Wang et al, 2011). In some experiments it was documented that the organic form of selenium (especially selenomethionine) is more available than inorganic forms (Pavlata et al, 2001; Gunter et al, 2003; Kuricová et al, 2003Weiss and Hogan, 2005; Guyot et al, 2007; Pechova et al, 2008Steen et al, 2008;Sevcikova et al, 2011;Pavlata et al, 2011a).…”
