“…Also, the complexity of the analysis of foams (or micro-layer) for org-I, especially at low concentrations, might well have dissuaded many from further study. This would agree with the fact that it has generally only been applied to the water column of near-shore environments where concentrations are relatively high Stipani cev and Branica, 1996;Cheng, 1998, 2001). Even so, over the last decade more sophisticated analytical methods based upon IC-ICP-MS (Gilfedder et al, 2007), HPLC (Schwehr and Santschi, 2003) and Neutron Activation (Hou et al, 1999) have been introduced.…”

“…Total iodine (TI) was determined indirectly, as iodate, after oxidation of reduced iodine species by UV-irradiation (24 h, 150-W mercury lamp; Hanau, Germany) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. This was followed by treatment with hypochlorite to destroy any trace of peroxide as well as to reoxidise iodine species of lower oxidation state than iodate that might have formed during irradiation (Truesdale, 1975;Butler and Smith, 1980;Stipani cev and Branica, 1996;Wong and Cheng, 1998). To facilitate the removal of dissolved oxygen, as well as to destroy the excess of hypochlorite, sodium sulfite was also added to the samples (Wong and Zhang, 1992).…”

“…A similar occurrence of sulphide and high concentrations of nutrients were for the first time recorded from the bottom layer of a salt lake (Lake Rogoznica) on the eastern Adriatic coast by Buljan (1956). All the other investigations of biological and chemical characteristics of the lake showed permanent stratification of the entire water column and the presence of sulphide in the bottom layer (Ciglenečki et al, 1996(Ciglenečki et al, , 1998Mihelčić et al, 1996;Stipaničev and Branica, 1996;Viličić et al, 1996). The community of the lake consisted of a limited number of species (adapted to the specific physical-chemical conditions in the lake).…”

“…In anoxic waters such as the Black Sea (Luther 1991;Luther and Campbell 1991;Truesdale et al 2001b), some deep trenches (Wong and Brewer 1977;Wong et al 1985;Ullman et al 1990), and parts of some estuaries (e.g., Luther and Cole 1988;Abdel-Moati 1999;Truesdale et al 2001a), only iodide is present. There is also mounting evidence that iodate can be reduced (chemically) in hypoxic waters (Stipaničev and Branica 1996;Ž ic and Branica 2006a;Ž ic et al 2008. Dissolved organic-I has been observed in coastal waters and estuaries Wong and Cheng 1998;Zhang 2001, 2003) but concentrations are small offshore (Truesdale 1975).…”
