“…On the other hand, subjects older than 65 years of age consumed iodized salt less frequently at all the study phases than younger people, so aging might be associated with the stabilization of iodized salt intake between the second and third phases. In any case, iodized salt intake in our population at the third phase still remained below the World Health Organization recommendations [18], and was similar (or even slightly higher) to the intake reported recently in a national study with a representative sample of the general adult Spanish population [9]. The increase of iodized salt intake between the first and second phases of the study may be related with the Hawthorne effect [19], since there was no institutional campaign targeting the general adult population in Spain or in Andalusia favoring iodized salt consumption.…”
