Iodine concentration and content measured by dual-source computed tomography are correlated to thyroid hormone levels in euthyroid patients

Abstract: Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation of the dual energy CT measured iodine concentration and total iodine content with blood measured thyroid parameters. Methods: 43 patients with normal thyroid function at our hospital from August 2017 to October 2019 were included in this retrospective study. Dual energy CT was used to scan the neck of thyroid patients. The mean iodine concentration and thyroid tissue volume were measured to calculate the total iodine content of the thyroid. R… Show more

“…35 Interestingly, because of different attenuation coefficients of the same substance at different energy X-rays, dual-energy CT scanning technique not only easily distinguishes iodine from other different substances but also accurately and quantitatively calculates the IC in the region of interest. 17 Through DSCT scanning, our results unveiled lower levels of IC in plain CT and venous phase NIC in TC patients than those in patients with benign lesions. There is evidence suggesting that some thyroid follicular cells existing in nodular goiter, adenoma, and other benign lesions still show normal functions of iodine uptake; however, thyroid follicular cells are almost replaced by fibrotic connective tissues and cancer cells in papillary TC, leading to the loss of iodine uptake function.…”

“…16 The thyroid IC level measured by dual-energy CT shows utility for evaluating human iodine nutritional status and thyroid function, facilitating the diagnosis and management of thyroid diseases. 17 Notably, relative to conventional CT images, quantitative dual-energy CT parameters (such as IC) can efficiently diagnose small lymph node metastases in TC. 18 Given the distinct advantages, the clinical utility of DSCT in TC diagnosis is worth investigating.…”
