Involvement of prostate in the regulation of serum levels of FSH, LH, and prolactin in male rats

Abstract: Circulatory levels of LH and FSH were measured in serum of male rats (28, 35, 42, 63, 70, 77, and 207 days of age) 7 days following sham operation, castration (C), prostatectomy (P), and castration + prostatectomy (C + P). In C + P rats that were 49, 63, 70, 77, and 207 days of age, the plasma FSH was significantly elevated as compared to the C group. Administration of aqueous prostatic extract restored the circulatory FSH level in C + P animals to that observed in C animals, whereas in C animals FSH levels we… Show more

“…Plasma levels of prolactin were increased 14 and 21 days after prostatectomy in male rats (Chaudhuri etal., 1991). This is thought to be due to the absence of a prolactin-regulating factor secreted by the prostatic gland (Hurkadli et al, 1986). Prostatectomy is also associated with the inhibition of dopamine turnover in the median eminence and medial basal hypothalamus (Chaudhurietal., 1991).…”

“…Hypersecretion of prolactin may be caused by inhibition of the hypothalamic dopaminergic system, as dopamine is known to inhibit prolactin secretion (Ghosheral., 1991). Hurkadli et al (1986), however, described the suppression of circulating prolactin levels 7 days after prostatectomy in the male rat. A significant drop in prolactin levels following prostatectomy has also been reported in patients with BPH (Rolandi et al, 1980).…”

“…Due to the inhibitory effect of dopamine on prolactin secretion, prolactin hypersecretion in BPH patients could be related to inhibition of the hypothalamic dopaminergic system [12,15]. On the other hand, in addition to its stimulating effect on TSH, TRH stimulates prolactin secretion [16].…”

“…Hurkadli ve arkadaşları, erkek ratlarda prostatektemi sonrası 7 ila 15 günlerde prolaktin seviyesinde düşme tanımlamışlardır (5). Prolaktin seviyelerindeki benzer düşme BPH'li hastalara yapılan prostatektomi sonrası da rapor edilmiştir (10).…”
