“…In vitro studies conducted on several cell lines have suggested the possible role of oxidative stress on FB 1 -induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis (Bernabucci et al 2011;Domijan et al 2015;Ferrante et al 2002;Kang and Alexander 1996;Klaric et al 2007;Kouadio et al 2005;Mary et al 2012;Mobio et al 2003;Stockmann-Juvala et al 2004a, b). Similar results were also observed in mice (Abbes et al 2015), rats (Hassan et al 2014) and broiler chicks (Poersch et al 2014). Oxidative stress will occur in cells when the concentration of ROS exceeds the antioxidant capacity (Mishra et al 2014).…”

“…for 12 weeks decreased GSH content in the liver and kidney and down-regulated the gene expression of antioxidants enzymes such as GPX, SOD and CAT (Hassan et al 2014). When broiler chicks were administered the FB 1 diet (100 mg/kg) for 21 days, the hepatic CAT activity in the liver was significantly increased, showing that subacute exposure of FB 1 induced liver oxidative stress in broiler chicks (Poersch et al 2014). In SMC of male Wistar rats subchronically (90 days) fed with culture material containing 100 mg/kg of FB 1 , the CAT and SOD activities were increased in the poisoned animals, indicating the hypothesis of an oxidative stress-mediated genotoxicity induced by FB 1 (Theumer et al 2010).…”

“…In particular, DON decreased SOD activity in embryo fibroblast DF-1 cells [161] and AFB1 feed contamination was associated with decreased SOD in the chicken liver [162][163] and erythrocytes [164]. However, the activities of SOD, GST and non-protein thiol levels in the chicken liver were not altered by the FB1-containing (100 mg/kg) diet fed for 21 days [165].…”

“…It has been shown that subacute treatment with FB 1 (100 mg/kg FB 1 in feed fed for 21 days) had significant negative effect on oxidative stress parameters in the liver of broiler chicks. It increased hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels and catalase activity, however the superoxide dismutase and GST level were not altered (Poersch et al, 2014). Wang and Groopman (1999) reported that fumonisins are the only carcinogenic mycotoxins not having a direct DNA damage inducing effect, so genotoxicity is an indirect consequence of the oxidative damage caused by the toxin.…”
