Electric-arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a by-product of steel production and recycling. This fine-grained material contains high amounts of zinc and iron as well as significant amounts of potentially toxic elements such as lead, cadmium and chromium. Therefore, the treatment and stabilization of this industrial residue is necessary. Concrete is a well-known suitable environment for stabilization/solidification of materials which have leachable elements in need of fixation. The effect of the EAFD content on the mechanical and chemical performance of Portland cement concrete is investigated in this paper. The effect of the EAFD content on the setting time of cement slurry was also analyzed. The axial compressive strength of the concrete samples increases with the EAFD addition in the range of 10 to 20 wt. (%) EAFD; also the tensile strength increases with the EAFD addition. An increase in EAFD content significantly increases the setting time of the concrete. The acetic acid leaching and water solubilization tests indicate low mobility of the potentially toxic elements from the EAFD concrete composite. The results of the immersion tests show that the addition of EAFD to the concrete seems to reduce chloride penetration, which may help prevent pitting corrosion in reinforced concrete.

RESUMO -Dentre os principais resíduos gerados durante a produção de aço via aciaria elétrica destaca-se o pó de forno elétrico, cuja geração específica situa-se em torno de 15 a 20 kg por tonelada de aço. Sua composição química é rica em ferro (20-50%) e em zinco (em torno de 15%), característica que acarreta a esse resíduo potencial para ser reutilizado tanto na produção de aço quanto na de zinco metálico, evitando seu descarte em aterros industriais. Vale ressaltar que a presença de elementos tóxicos como cádmio e chumbo torna o processo de aterramento oneroso por se tratar de um resíduo tóxico. Assim, a fim de aumentar a sustentabilidade do setor, promovendo uma melhor reutilização dos recursos minerais, este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar possíveis rotas de aproveitamento dos teores metálicos presentes no pó de forno elétrico, incluindo lixiviações ácidas ou alcalinas, métodos pirometalúrgicos e rotas híbridas, que consistem na combinação de métodos distintos, além de apresentar destinações finais alternativas aos aterros industriais.

The paper presents the results of investigations of physical and chemical properties of after reclamation dust that is generated in the foundry industry. Universally applied mechanical reclamation processes of spent moulding sands generate large amounts of after-reclamation dusts containing mainly rubbed spent binding agents and quartz dusts. An amount of after-reclamation dusts-in dependence of the reclamation system efficiency and the reclaim dedusting system-can reach 5-10 % in relation to the total reclaimed spent moulding sand. After-reclamation dusts originated from spent moulding sands with different kinds of resins mostly belong to dangerous wastes, since they contain chemo-setting binders with dangerous substances removed in the reclamation process. None of the companies producing mechanical reclamation systems offers presently the complex technology and equipment for utilisation of after reclamation dusts, which would meet technical and economic expectations of foundry plants. The paper presents the results of research carried out at the Faculty of Foundry Engineering AGH UST in Cracow which aims on the determination of possibilities of using the post-reclamation dust generated during mechanical reclamation of used moulding sands with organic resins as a source of energy. Different dusts generated in the mechanical reclamation process of used organic sands, delivered from foundries, were tested to determine their chemical composition, granular characterisation and physicochemical properties. As a result of the investigations, possible ways to utilise the dusts are presented.
