Investigations on the microstructure of drawn arc stud welds on structural steels by quantitative metallography

Abstract: The drawn arc stud welding is widely applied in steel construction, and its welding procedure can be qualified according to different standards by visual examinations and practical destructive tests of the resulting joint. An evaluation of the material properties is usually not requested particularly considering the locally limited weld region. Nevertheless, there is a need of knowledge regarding the complex press welding process metallurgy and resulting heterogeneous material properties in the welded zone, es… Show more

“…The hygroscopic behavior can be suppressed by applying commercial hydrophobic agents for building protection before. In [2] it was found, that there is no negatively affect on the weld process. In this study, "modified" ferrules were dip impregnated with Evonik Protectosil ® BNH.…”

“…Thus, there is a risk of enhanced hydrogen cracking susceptibility, especially for stud welding on high strength steels or under adverse welding conditions [1]. The scope of application for stud welding comprises usage under harsh surrounding conditions like underwater for repair and maintenance measures in hydraulic steelwork [2], repair of offshore installations [3] or welding on construction site in general due to weather reasons [4].…”

“…Welding processes are included in the group of special processes that require formalized supervision, which results, among others, from the ISO 9001 standard, and is included in detail in EN ISO 3834 [1,2]. For this reason, much attention is paid to the issues of ensuring the quality of welded joints.…”
