Investigations on polyurethane ionomers. II. 3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid-based anionomers

Methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer (MMA-MAA) membranes ionically crosslinked with Fe 3ϩ and Co 2ϩ ions (MMA-MAA-Fe 3ϩ and -Co 2ϩ ) were prepared, and characteristics of permeation and separation for a benzene/cyclohexane mixture of 50 wt % benzene through these membranes in pervaporation (PV) were studied. Although the introduction of the metal ions to the MMA-MAA membrane enhanced both benzene permselectivity and permeability for a benzene/cyclohexane mixture, the PV characteristics between the MMA-MAA-Fe 3ϩ and -Co 2ϩ membranes were significantly different. The difference in the PV characteristics between these membranes was strongly governed by the difference of these membrane structures based on the glass transition temperature, contact angle to methylene iodide, degree of swelling, and mixture composition absorbed in the membrane, and so on.

An aqueous dispersible polyurethane was prepared by the reaction of hydroxyl-terminated poly(ethylene adipate), dimethylol propionic acid, 4,4Ј-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and ethylene glycol. Formation of the dispersion was achieved by phase inversion of an acetone solution of the polyurethane with water, utilizing carboxylate anion groups as the internal emulsifying sites. The amount of acetone added has a large effect on the particle diameter (0.08 to 8.61 m) and particle size distribution of the polyurethane emulsion. The storage stability was evaluated in terms of particle size distribution breadth. The aqueous emulsion obtained with no use of acetone was sufficiently stable in storage for at least 6 months. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new diol with a one-sided azobenzenecarboxyl group was prepared to be used for photosensible polymers synthesis. Azobenzene carboxyl containing polyurethane based on poly(tetramethylene oxide) diol of 2000 average molecular weight, 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, and the mentioned azo diol, was obtained and characterized. Upon neutralization the acid form with metal acetate (Li ϩ1 , Ca ϩ2 ) or triethylamine azo carboxylate anionomers with an improved phase separation were obtained. Viscometric mea-surements of diluted dimethylformamide solutions exhibited evidence of polyelectrolyte behavior. Some aspects of the trans-cis photoisomerization have been examined to design in future various dyed aqueous dispersions. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
