Investigations on Drilling of Bidirectional Cotton Polyester Composite

Abstract: Cotton fiber composites are currently used in the interior parts of automobiles, insulation boards, fiber boards and various parts of high-friction mechanical assemblies. These composites are subjected to machining operations. Drilling is an indispensable machining operation for assembly of different parts. The present work aimed to experimental and analytical investigations on drilling of bi-directional cotton polyester composite.Influence of feed, spindle speed and drill point angle on machining characterist… Show more

“…Moreover, it has been observed that, the combined effect of tool traverse rate and point angle majorly impacts the torque produced. 43 The type of reinforcement used in a composite has a major impact on the thrust force and torque. In a research on hole making of vetiveria zizanioides and jute reinforced hybrid laminates, a comparative analysis between composite reinforced with only bio-fibres and composite reinforced with a mixture of bio-fibres and artificial fibres has been made.…”

“…72 Drilling studies on cotton fibre composite results stated that there is no direct correlation between the thrust force and delamination, since the result evident that there is no high delamination at high thrust force produced holes. 70 This result is completely opposite to the results of Lotfi et al 80 Lotfi reported that the thrust force and delamination are closely related. The delamination of the laminate increased correspondingly with the increase in the thrust force.…”

“…The filler addition in fibre composites increases the thrust force and torque due to the elevation in the hardness of the composites. 65 Chaudhary et al 70 investigated the cotton fibre composites and found an increase in the thrust force and torque at higher point angle tool in higher feed rate of drilling. At lower point angle, the shear area and the induced stress were low, this, in turn, produced lower drilling force.…”

“…Chaudhary and Gohil [35] conducted an experimental study of the drilling performance, e.g., the thrust force, torque and exit delamination factor, on polyester/bidirectional cotton fiber biocomposites by varying the cutting parameters, namely, the spindle speed and feed speed geometry of a 10 mm diameter drill. In addition, the tests were carried out by the Taguchi orthogonal method (L27) to optimize the cutting forces and damage using a one-way analysis (ANOVA) method.…”
