Investigations into the growth behaviour of a toluene‐degrading Pseudomonas strain, taking the high vapour pressure of toluene into consideration

Abstract: A toluene-degrading Pseudomonas species isolated from waste water was studied with regard to its growth behaviour. The dependence of the growth rate on the pH value, on the toluene concentration and on temperature, as well as the O2 consumption of the isolate were determined. The fact that toluene is a highly volatile substrate, which is present both in the liquid and in the gas phase of a reactor, was considered in the experiments. It is shown that the volatility of toluene has to be taken into consideration … Show more

“…6 also applies to both phases being saturated with the VOC: K EA;L=G ¼ C Ã EA;L =C Ã EA;G . This principle was successfully used for toluene with a markedly low water solubility of only 0.59 g/L at 30°C [35], but is not applicable to ethanol which is mixable with water limitless [29,30].…”

“…The relation between p à EA;G and the total pressure is identical with the volume fraction of ethyl acetate in the gas phase considering the evaporated ester as an ideal gas. This can be used for calculating saturation concentrations in the gas phase [35]:…”

“…Many pure culture isolates, including various strains of Pseudomonas putida, have also been studied, but they often could not degrade all BTEX compounds simultaneously and efficiently under hypoxic conditions (Burback & Perry 1993;Cruden et al 1992;Dararat & Riffat 1999;Goudar et al 2000;Keener & Arp 1994;Komukai-Nakamura et al 1996;Lee et al 1994;Lo¨ser & Ray 1994;Lu et al 2000;Mason et al 2000;Moriya & Horikoshi 1993;Phelps & Young 1999;Yerushalmi et al 1999). Furthermore, aerobic biodegradation is often limited by oxygen available in the environment.…”
