“…He et al (2010) conducted a true triaxial single-face dynamic unloading test on limestone to investigate its acoustic emission (AE) characteristics and found AE signals with a high amplitude and low frequency before the test sample was broken. A direct shear test was also used to study bedding planes formed by purplish-red mudstone and argillaceous limestone from the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (Wu et al, 2018). Results illustrated that bedding planes between intensively weathered mudstone and slightly weathered limestone were the most dangerous potential sliding planes.…”

“…According to the International Society for Rock Mechanics [ 26 ], the size and shape of the specimen for the laboratory determination of the shear strength of the rock joint are recommended to have a regular cross section, and the width of the test plane should be at least 48 mm. According to the commonly used direct shear apparatus, square-shaped specimens with side lengths of 100 or 150 mm were mainly used [ 27 , 28 ]. For the texture of the rock joint surface, textures with dull colors and repeating or symmetrical patterns may cause the resultant 3D model to be incomplete, decrease the accuracy of the model, and even lead to 3D reconstruction failure.…”

“…Based on these shear tests, researchers have informed attempts to establish theoretical and empirical shear strength criteria for the interface between geotechnical materials and structures (Gómez et al, 2003;Kosoglu et al, 2010;Kang and Liao, 2019;Kang et al, 2021). These include shear strength models for the interface between different rock types (Patton, 1966;Barton, 1973;Grasselli and Egger, 2003;Cottrell, 2009;Wu et al, 2018), rock and concrete (Andjelkovic et al, 2015;Krounis et al, 2016), soil and concrete (Gómez et al, 2003;Yazdani et al, 2019), and soil and geotextile (Esterhuizen et al, 2001;Iryo and Rowe, 2005;Tolooiyan et al, 2009;Portelinha and Zornberg, 2017). Due to the non-linear change in interfacial shear strength, new guidelines for shear model development consider the effect of the interface morphology on shear strength.…”
