Investigation on the sensitivity of flexible foundation models of an offshore wind turbine under earthquake loadings

Abstract: This paper presents an investigation on the sensitivity of flexible foundation models of offshore wind turbines subjected to earthquake loadings. A novel seismic analysis framework (SAF) is developed and implemented in an open source aero-hydro-elastic analysis tool, "FAST", for accurately modelling the effects of seismic loadings on offshore wind turbines. SAF has been validated through comparisons against experimentally validated numerical tools, GH Bladed and NREL Seismic. The behaviours of three flexible f… Show more

“…Fig. 4 presents the tower-top displacements of the NREL 5 MW monopile OWT [23] obtained by Bladed and SCASCA, respectively, for different earthquake loadings. For each of the simulations, the earthquake is assumed to occur at the 20 th s. To avoid the influence of the difference between FAST and Bladed in predicting aerodynamic loads, the wind turbine is only subjected to the earthquake loading.…”

“…The SSI effect was examined using the linear coupled-springs model. Yang et al [23][24] investigated the linear and nonlinear SSI effects on the seismic behaviour of a 5 MW OWT using a newly developed numerical tool based on FAST. The dominance of wind, wave and earthquake loadings was discussed for the 5 MW wind turbine.…”

“…In Ref. [10][11][12][13], Asareh and Prowell selected FAST as a design basis, developed a seismic module to examine the coupled effect of wind and seismic loads, and employed an improved FAST (also known as NREL Seismic) to investigate the relationship between seismic intensity and structural response. Additionally, in Ref.…”
