Investigation on the self-association of an inorganic coordination compound with biological activity (Casiopeína III-ia) in aqueous solution

Abstract: From studies using different experimental techniques employed to determine the presence of aggregates e.g. isothermal titration calorimetry, surface tension, electrical conductivity, UV–Vis spectrophotometry, dynamic and static light scattering, it is clearly demonstrated that the compound [Cu(4, 4′-dimethyl-2, 2′-bipyridine)(acetylacetonato)H2O]NO3 (Casiopeína III-ia), promising member of a family of new generation compounds for cancer treatment, is able to auto associate in aqueous media. Physicochemical pro… Show more

“…At low concentrations, an increase in the electrical conductivity with the concentration is observed, but then the electrical conductivity decreases. The observed phenomenon is only the result of a sharp change in the charge and mobility of the aggregates compared with the free molecules of macrocycles . Despite the deprotonation of hydroxy groups at basic pH, we observe a decrease in conductivity due to the slow diffusion of aggregates to the electrode as compared with free molecules.…”

“…The observed phenomenon is only the result of a sharp change in the charge and mobility of the aggregates compared with the free molecules of macrocycles. 34 Despite the deprotonation of hydroxy groups at basic pH, we observe a decrease in conductivity due to the slow diffusion of aggregates to the electrode as compared with free molecules. Hence, the presence of inflection on pH dependence may be explained by enlargement of aggregates, which correlates well with the breakpoint on conductometric dependence.…”
