Investigation on the genus Squalus in the Sardinian waters (Central-Western Mediterranean) with implications on its management

Abstract: In the Mediterranean Sea, in addition to the two historically known species belonging to the Squalus genus, a third species, Squalus megalops, has been reported. Considering the high level of morphologic similarity of this species with the native species S. blainville, this study aims to evaluate the Central-Western Mediterranean spurdog population in order to test the hypothesis of the presence of two distinct species S. blainville and S. megalops. A total of 137 spurdogs, caught in the Sardinian waters, were… Show more

“…Tsagarakis et al (2013) also reported S. blainville to be one of the most important species of the demersal assemblages in the eastern Ionian Sea. The reason for this replacement between these two sharks could be related to taxonomic problems afflicting the Squalus genus and currently solved in different areas of the Mediterranean (Bonello et al 2016, Bellodi et al 2018. Indeed, recent studies (e.g.…”

“…Species belonging to the family Squalidae have been under taxonomic revision in recent years, reporting species complexes and describing new species in the area (Bellodi et al, ; Pfleger et al, ; Viana et al, , ; Viana & De Carvalho, ). S. quasimodo has recently been added to the VEEZ, denoting that the species has probably been confused and reported as S. acanthias (L. 1758).…”

“…Regarding S. megalops, described for the first time by Muñoz-Chápuli et al (1984), its occurrence in the Mediterranean is still debated and needs to be confirmed (Muñoz-Chápuli & Ramos 1989;Marouani et al 2012;Bonello et al 2015;Kousteni et al 2016;Verissimo et al 2016;Vella et al 2017;Bellodi et al 2018;Giarruso 2019). In any case, specimens of S. megalops for which the identification is considered feasible were rarely reported in the catches (Bonello et al 2015;Bellodi et al 2018). Most of the catches of this species are recorded from the northern coasts of Canary Islands, Morocco and southern Spain (Malaga).…”
