The production of modern machines requires parts with much greater geometric accuracy and surface geometry (SG) precision than several years ago. These requirements are met by so-called hybrid technologies that must simultaneously be inexpensive to implement. The integration of treatment procedures (usually in one operation) is geared towards achieving a synergistic effect. Combining different treatments from various technologies produces synergy, i.e., benefits greater than the optimization of each individual process done separately. This paper presents experimental results and numerical experiment data on surface plastic deformation. The hybrid technology used in the study was a combination of milling and finishing with plastic burnishing using a ceramic ball. These processes were integrated on a multi-axis CNC machining center. The plastic deformations of real surfaces were determined in simulations. The paper also discusses the structure of the model and how to use it to conduct a finite element method (FEM) computer simulation. The aim of the study was to determine how to use the potential developed model of hybrid treatment to predict the surface performance expressed by the amplitude, volume, and functional parameters of the surface geometry, with the EN-ISO 25178-2 profile.

Often, surface mechanical treatments (SMT) or heat (quenching, tempering) are used to improve the surface condition and mechanical characteristics such as impact resistance and tensile strength. Hence the objective of this experimental work, where ball burnishing (BB) as well as quenching and tempering were applied on S355 JR steel specimens in order to evaluate the surface hardness "Hv", the rupture strength "Rm", the energy absorbed "W" during the impact test and the work-hardened thickness "e" after the burnishing operation. Factorial designs were used for the tests organization and mathematical models were established for the prediction of "Hv", "Rm", "W" and "e" in function on treatment parameters considered: number of tool passes ( i) and the pressure force (Py). The results show that the surface hardness increases by 30.46%. The high levels of "Py" and "i" were allowed to improve "Rm" by 30.8% as well as an increase in tenacity of only 3.6%. Increasing the force to 20kgf promotes mixed rupture under the effect of impact to shock. The quenching and tempering improve the resistance "Rm" by 183% and 119% respectively, while the effect of burnishing was limited to a rate of increase of this property of 28% compared to machining.

Effect of Combined Grinding–Burnishing Process on Surface Integrity, Tribological, and Corrosion Performance of Laser‐Clad Stellite 21 Alloys

Herein, the influence of the grinding–burnishing on surface integrity, mechanical properties, and corrosion performance of Stellite 21 alloys coating deposited by laser cladding is investigated. The as‐clad specimens are first ground followed by further modification by ball burnishing at forces of 424 N and 509 N. Results show that the grinding–burnishing enhances surface finish by lowering Ra from 2.6 to 0.73 μm and Rz from 13 to 4.9 μm, respectively. Surface porosity is found to decrease from 3.8% to 0.9%. Hardness is increased from 609 HV to 702 HV, with a surface alteration as deep as 250 μm, while wear resistance increases by reducing worn volume from 4.15 to 2.95 mm3. Because of high hardness, the grinding–burnishing increases impact resistance by lowering indent depth by 20%. Grains flatten and surface undulations are remarkably reduced due to burnishing. Finally, grinding–burnishing at 509 N improves the corrosion resistance by increasing positive corrosion potential from −0.41 to −0.14 V and lowering corrosion current density from 6.34 × 10−4 A cm−2 to 2.19 × 10−5 A cm−2, as compared to grinding. This synergistic grinding–burnishing can be a plausible post‐treatment route for the laser‐clad alloys.
