Investigation on structure and properties of anion exchange membranes based on tetramethylbiphenol moieties containing copoly(arylene ether)s

Abstract: Quaternary ammonium functionalized poly(arylene ether)s (QPAEs) containing 2,2 0 ,6,6 0 -tetramethylbiphenol moieties were designed and successfully synthesized via nucleophilic substitution polycondensation, bromination, quaternization and alkalization.

“…This kind of polymers can be subdivided into: aliphatic copolymers synthesized by free radical polymerization 133–140, plasma‐polymerization 141–144, ring‐opening polymerization 145, 146, ATRP 147 and RAFT 148, random aromatic copolymers 149–175, copolymers with locally high concentration of ammonium moieties 176–184, and multi‐block copolymers 185–190, especially with long hydrophilic/hydrophobic blocks 191–197.…”

“…First, a series of tetramethyl biphenyl bearing poly(arylene ethers) (PAEs) (PAE‐a to PAE‐e) with tuned sulfone–ketone structures were synthesized by aromatic nucleophilic substitution through changes in the molar ratio of DFBP to DFDPS according to a previous work . The molar ratios of DFBP to DFDPS ( m 1 / m 2 ) for PAE‐a to PAE‐e were 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, and 0:1, respectively.…”

“…The aromatic protons located in the benzene ring varied between 6.8 and 7.9 ppm this is based on the observed peaks of H f , H c , and H e at 7.2 ppm and 6.9 ppm respectively. H d , on the other hand, was found at 7.8 ppm [21][22][23]. H c and H e are found in the high field because the neighboring carbon is substituted by electron donor, and H d is found in the low field due to the neighboring carbon is substituted by aliphatic carbon chains.…”
