Investigation on liquid bath nitriding of selected steels

Abstract: The influence of experimental parameters, such as temperature, time, alloy composition and nitriding bath composition, on nitriding case formation on three steels has been investigated. Two of the steels are of low alloy type, one with low carbon (DIN 1?6523) and the other with medium carbon (DIN 1?7225). The third alloy is a nitriding alloy (DIN 1?8550). Two cyanate baths are used, i.e. type 1 (80 wt-% potassium cyanate) and type 2 (40 wt-% potassium cyanate). Higher temperatures, times and bath compositions … Show more

“…The hardness profile of the diffusion layer would be obviously increased due to the appearance of alloy nitrides, [13,16] and thinner compound layers have been observed when the content of the nitride-forming elements reaches some certain values. [11,16,17] It is inevitable that Cr-nitride (CrN) appears in the compound layer on nitride-high chromium steels. [18,19] The effect of the chromium nitride on the mechanical properties of the compound layer seems to be negative.…”

“…It is well established that nitrocarburising and boriding treatment of steels generate surfaces which causes considerable modification in the mechanical, tribological and corrosion properties [1,2]. Liquid nitrocarburising is a thermochemical treatment in which nitrogen and carbon are supplied simultaneously to ferrous alloy surfaces at temperatures between 823 K to 853 K, causing the formation of the compound layers ε-Fe 2-3 (C,N) and γ'-Fe 4 (C,N) followed by a diffusion zone [3,4].…”
