Investigation of Voltage Imbalance Due to Distribution Network Unbalanced Line Configurations and Load Levels

Abstract: In distribution power systems line transposition is not a common practice and phase loading levels are always changing. Therefore, perfect balance is never achieved at a distribution level. Non-transposed lines can cause unequal voltage drops between phases and this may be further exacerbated by uneven loads in each phase. Consequently, the voltage magnitude of a certain phase may suffer a severe decrease, breaching the lower voltage limit or unbalanced three-phase voltages at a remote bus may violate the perc… Show more

“…So, the main factor that leads to the asymmetrical operation of the synchronous hydro generator is the asymmetry of three-phase current [1]. In real life, the existence of asymmetrical load, such as the electric locomotive in transportation, the electric furnace in metallurgical factory and the asymmetrical impedance of three-phase lines, leads to the generation of asymmetrical current in power grid [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Since the synchronous hydro generator is directly connected to the grid through the transformer, the influence of asymmetrical three-phase current on the generator is inevitable.…”

“…Investigating the voltage unbalance level during a long period, many violations of the limit imposed by the [3] have been found, mostly if the BEVs charging is not coordinated by any control algorithm. A detailed assessment on the impact of asymmetrical line geometry and unbalanced load on the voltage profiles is developed in [6]: it proposes a new load transposition method for mitigating the voltage unbalance. As explained in [7]- [9], the unbalanced voltage conditions impacts heavily on the motors (heating increase, torque pulsation, and reduction of lifespan).…”
