Investigation of VMAT Algorithms and Dosimetry

Abstract: Abstract-Purpose: Planning and dosimetry of different VMAT algorithms (SmartArc, Ergo++, Autobeam) is compared with IMRT for Head and Neck Cancer patients. Modelling was performed to rule out the causes of discrepancies between planned and delivered dose. Methods: Five HNC patients previously treated with IMRT were re-planned with SmartArc (SA), Ergo++ and Autobeam. Plans were compared with each other and against IMRT and evaluated using DVHs for PTVs and OARs, delivery time, monitor units (MU) and dosimetric a… Show more

“…In the years since the near‐ubiquitous TG‐142 value was established, a new radiotherapy technique has increased in prevalence; volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is a modern arc‐based therapy characterized by simultaneous variation of three parameters: dose rate, beam aperture shape and gantry rotation speed . VMAT offers the conformality and plan quality of IMRT while offering some improvements; most notably a reduction in monitor units (MU) and a reduced treatment delivery time …”

“…11,12 VMAT offers the conformality and plan quality of IMRT while offering some improvements; most notably a reduction in monitor units (MU) and a reduced treatment delivery time. [13][14][15] The rise of VMAT warrants another look at the established annual QA peak isocenter shift tolerance value, as it is reasonable to suspect that an arc-based therapy may differ in sensitivity to isocenter deviation than one consisting of static beams.…”
