Investigation of Trichomonas gallinae in passerines

Abstract: Trichomoniasis, caused by the protozoan Trichomonas gallinae, has as main hosts birds of the Columbidae family, which have a high prevalence of the protozoan without manifesting the disease. The continuous growth of the pigeon population and its cosmopolitan nature mean that today there is a worldwide distribution of this species, being responsible for the distribution and maintenance of the prevalence of trichomoniasis in almost the entire world. The transmission of the disease may be by direct contact, or in… Show more

“…In Mashhad birds, no Cryptosporidium or Giardia parasites have been detected, although these protozoan parasites are widely distributed worldwide (Morgan et al., 2000 ; Qi et al., 2011 ; Reuschel et al., 2020 ; Sandoval‐Rodríguez et al., 2021 ). It is consistent with global findings that companion birds have a lower prevalence of Trichomonas than other bird species (Chou et al., 2022 ), based on the results of oral swabs (Martínez et al., 2023 ; Park, 2011 ). Accordingly, these observations highlight the importance of regional factors when addressing parasitic infections in Psittaciformes and Passeriformes , requiring region‐specific management and prevention strategies.…”
