Investigation of Transition Metal-Xanthate Complexes for Nonlinear Optical Applications

Abstract: We have synthesized several metal xanthate complexes from metal salts and xanthate potassium salts. Powders of several of the materials were sorted and tested for their nonlinear optical properties. Cadmium xanthate demonstrated phase matchability for frequency doubling of 1.06 micron light and generated a very strong second harmonic signal.

“…Sodium and potassium ethyl xanthate have antidotal effects in acute mercurial poisoning. Transition metal xanthate complexes have been investigated for nonlinear optical applications [7], and Cd xanthate was demonstrated to have nonlinear optical properties and generated a very strong 2 nd harmonic signal. To the best of our knowledge, the reaction products of Cd xanthate with Lewis bases have been much less extensively studied than other similar compounds.…”

“…Xanthates can form bidentate, monodentate, or network solids, showing a wide range of coordination behaviour [3][4][5][6]. More recent applications of xanthates and other thiocompounds are in the production of nanoparticles of metal sulphides [7,8] and NLO properties [9,10]. Metal xanthates are extensively used as corrosion inhibitors [11] and agricultural reagents [12,13].…”

“…These are extensively used as fungicides, pesticides, rubber accelerator, corrosion inhibitors, agricultural reagents and quite recently in therapy for HIV infections [9][10][11] . Metal xanthate complexes and their reaction products with a variety of Lewis bases have been extensively studied [12][13][14] while transition metal xanthate complexes have been investigated for non linear optical properties 15 .…”
