Investigation of the transverse and longitudinal moments at the transverse free end of deck slab cantilevers subjected to CHBDC truck loading

Abstract: Clause 5.7.1.3 of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) specifies an equation for the calculation of transverse moment intensity (My) in the deck slab cantilever due to truck loading in a slab-on-girder bridge system. Also, it states that the transverse moment intensity shall be assumed 2My for the locations within a distance equal to cantilever length of the transverse free end of the deck slab cantilever. However, CHBDC design values do not consider the effects of barrier length, variable thickness… Show more

“…Table 2-1. Maximum overhang moments, My, due to unfactored CL-625 Truck wheel loads (Pourmand andSennah, 2018, CSA, 2019a) The deck slab of a slab-on-girder bridge is a member which not only provides support and transfers all the moving loads to the main loading bearing elements of the bridge such as girders but also gives a smooth riding surface to the traffic. These deck slabs run in the transverse direction, i.e., perpendicular to the moving traffic.…”

“…Their study addressed the gap in CHBDC of 2014 in calculating My values since it did not consider barrier length, overhang length, and edge stiffening types. While Micovic's research focused on the interior segments of the deck overhang, Pourmand (2017) extended this research to examine the My values at the overhang end (i.e. over the bridge supporting line).…”
