Riley's (1994) Stuttering Severity Instrument (SSI) has three components: a symptom frequency measure (%SS), average duration of the three longest stutters, and a physical concomitant (PC) score. An assessment of whether it was necessary to use all of these when using SSI-3 to identify which children are at risk of speech difficulties was performed. Participants were 879 reception class children aged 4-6 years from UK schools. The distributions of the separate components of SSI-3 were examined. Departures from normality were noted for each component. The features seen in the distribution of the individual components were also apparent in the distribution of the overall scores (this was not normal and had multiple modes). These findings undermine the usefulness of the overall measure for identifying children at risk of speech difficulties. Prior work used a fixed SSI-3 threshold to identify at risk children. Classification of children as fluent or at risk based on this threshold was compared with classifications based on thresholds applied to the individual components. Classifications were comparable for %SS, but less satisfactory for duration and PC. These findings suggest that %SS performs similarly to the overall SSI-3 scores when used to identify at risk children. Procedures for identifying at risk children in schools need to be short and easy to administer. Thus, since there is no justification for including all components of SSI-3 and duration and physical concomitants are not sensitive measures of fluency, a procedure based on the frequency measure alone is appropriate for use in schools.

Resumo: OBJETIVO: caracterizar e comparar a frequência das disfluências da fala de adultos com gagueira desenvolvimental persistente familial do sexo masculino e feminino, a severidade do distúrbio e determinar a prevalência familial e a razão entre gêneros da gagueira nos familiares dos probandos. MÉTODOS: participaram 30 adultos com gagueira (18 a 53 anos), divididos em dois grupos, sendo 20 do sexo masculino e 10 do sexo feminino. Os procedimentos realizados foram: história clínica e familial, avaliação da fluência e Instrumento de Severidade da Gagueira. RESULTADOS: as porcentagens de disfluências típicas da gagueira (p=0,352), de outras disfluências (p=0,947) e do total das disfluências (p=0,522) foram semelhantes entre os grupos masculino e feminino. A média de disfluências típicas da gagueira foi 5,23% e de outras disfluências 5,50%. O subtipo leve foi manifestado pela maioria dos participantes (83,3%). Os familiares do gênero masculino apresentaram maior risco de apresentar gagueira (p<0,001). Do total de 1002 familiares, 85 apresentaram gagueira. No total de familiares afetados (n=85), 53 eram do sexo masculino e 32 do feminino. CONCLUSÃO: não houve diferenças entre os grupos masculino e feminino nas medidas analisadas. Quanto à frequência das disfluências, aproximadamente metade do total das disfluências foi caracterizada como disfluências típicas da gagueira. O subtipo de gagueira desenvolvimental persistente familial foi caracterizado principalmente por um distúrbio classificado quanto à severidade como leve. O risco dos familiares dos probandos afetados foi de 8,5%. A gagueira afetou mais pessoas do gênero masculino em relação ao feminino, numa proporção de 3,72:1.

Objectives: This investigation aimed to compare the performance of two software packages, namely "Computerized Scoring of the Stuttering Severity (CSSS)" and "Praat," in calculating the mean duration of stuttered syllables. Methods:In this descriptive-analytical study, 35 eligible stuttering subjects (26 male and 9 female), aged between 18 and 42 (m=26.23±6.02) were selected via the non-probability sampling method to enter the study. Spontaneous speech samples of subjects with stuttering were recorded with the help of a video camera. Two separate tasks were used to calculate the Mean Duration of the Three Longest Stuttering Events (MDTLSE) by applying the second version of the CSSS software and the 5.3.78 version of the Praat software. In the first task, MDTLSE was measured 10 times for a subject with mild stuttering and a subject with severe stuttering. In the second task, MDTLSE was measured just one time for each stuttering participant, and comparison was performed by paired t-test using the SPSS Version 22.0 computer software. Results:In the first task, in which Praat and CSSS-2 were used for the calculation of MDTLSE (10 times), the minimum and maximum obtained values were found to differ by 0.007 seconds (7 milliseconds) and 0.2 seconds (200 milliseconds), respectively. In the second task, in which MDTLSE was calculated with the software CSSS-2 and Praat, the differences were 2.34±2.17 and 3.02±2.98, respectively, that were found to be statistically significant (P=0.025).Discussion: Higher reliability and replicability of duration values calculated by Praat software indicates that this software can be applied for more precise determination of duration of stuttered syllables.
