Investigation of the relationship between conceptual understanding and quantitative problem-solving in optics

Abstract: This study outlines ongoing research within the area of physics education, namely the investigation of the relationship between conceptual understanding and quantitative problem-solving. Industry, society and research need graduates to be excellent problem solvers with an ability to conceptualise and transfer their understanding and knowledge. However recent research has shown that physics students are not developing the conceptual understanding necessary to become adept problem-solvers. Physics education tend… Show more

“…Sharma et al 23 also adopted a phenomenographic methodology to describe the variations in the way in which students understood the concept of gravity. The Physics Education Research Group uses this approach to examine students' conceptual understanding and problem solving abilities 24,25 , as well as lecturers' conceptions of learning and teaching 26 . The findings from these research studies have informed the development and facilitation of the various pedagogical strategies.…”
