Investigation of the probability of concurrent drought events between the water source and destination regions of China's water diversion project

Abstract: In this study, we investigate the concurrent drought probability between the water source and destination regions of the central route of China's South to North Water Diversion Project. We find that both regions have been drying from 1960 to 2013. The estimated return period of concurrent drought events in both regions is 11 years. However, since 1997, these regions have experienced 5 years of simultaneous drought. The projection results of global climate models show that the probability of concurrent drought … Show more

“…The behavior and responses of the sending systems are IBWTP construction projects, including the engineering required for dam heightening and strengthening, source-water diversion projects, water quality management, and water-source protection. The states and impacts consist of reducing the risk of flooding, drought, and threats to biodiversity [25,26].…”

“…Due to the climate change and other causes, there is an "increasing concurrent drought events" that occurred in China challenging China's water management and grand water diversion project [24]. Under such general context, both Yunnan and the other southwest provinces have already suffered from severe water shortage (engineering shortage) during normal regular times, not to mention the dry seasons.…”

“…The Danjiangkou reservoir is the water source for the central route of China's South-to-North Water Transfer Project, which plays a critical role in water supply in North China Plain (Figure 1b). This largest water transfer infrastructure is designed to transfer 13 billion m 3 yr −1 of water from Danjiangkou reservoir (water source region) to the North China Plain (water destination region) since December 2014 [40]. For better management of Danjiangkou reservoir, it is of critical importance to improve the accuracy of long-term streamflow forecasts in the UHRB.…”
