Investigation of the Orientation of CTA+ Ions in the Interlayer of CTAB Pillared Montmorillonite

Abstract: e orientation of CTA + in the interlayer of organic pillared montmorillonite prepared by adding different amounts of surfactant corresponding to the CEC of the pristine clay mineral has been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra. Morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). e results are supported by the measurements of zeta potentials and contact angles of pristine clay and organoclay samples. From the XRD results, a series of arran… Show more

“…The basal spacing of this phase was significantly enlarged by pretreatment as a result of this swelling feature. 17,20 Interlayer spacing of MMT was quantitatively assessment using the Debye-Scherrer equation d = (kλ /β cos θ). In this equation d is the thickness of the crystal, k is the Debye-Scherrer constant (0.89), k is the X-ray wavelength (0.15406 nm), b is width of the peak with the maximum intensity in half height, and h is the diffraction angle.…”

“…Bu sonuç, CTA + iyonlarının MMT yüzeyindeki negatif merkezlere zayıf elektrostatik etkileşimlerle bağlandığını ve yatay çift tabaka şeklinde yönlenmiş CTA + iyonlarının kilin ıslanma karakteristiğini negatif yönde değiştirdiğini göstermektedir (Karaca et al, 2013).…”

“…Then splitting of the -CH 2 rocking bands is due to the intermolecular interaction between the two adjacent hydrocarbon chains in a perpendicular orthorhombic sub cell (Zhu et al 2005 andKaraca et al 2013) and further requires an all-trans-conformation for its detection (Synder et al.1979). The band in the region of 950-1100 cm -1 corresponding to stretching vibration of Si-O group splits into a sharp band at 1033 cm -1 with a shoulder around 1088 cm attributed to perpendicular Si-O stretching ).…”

“…With the increase of surfactant, a shoulder band shifted from 916 cm -1 to 918 cm -1 . The significant changes in Si-O stretching band suggest that there is an interaction between the surfactant molecules and siloxane (Si-O) surface (Karaca et al 2013 and. …”
