Investigation of the misalignment sensitivity of a birefringence-compensated two-rod Nd:YAG laser system

Abstract: A system for the compensation of thermally induced birefringence in laser rods that consists of two identical Nd:YAG laser rods, a telescope to image the principal planes of the rods onto each other and a 90 degrees quartz rotator to change the state of polarization between the rods has been set up, and its sensitivity to transversal and longitudinal misalignment has been investigated experimentally. A theoretical model to describe the increase of depolarization that is due to misalignment has been developed a… Show more

“…Finally, P G reaches a quasi-asymptotic behavior for high pumping power, which implies that depolarization is not complete. The same conclusion was also obtained by other authors studying a similar system [105].…”

“…For AlN the acquired bore-hole is more constant in diameter, the maximum drilling depth reaches 15.8 mm at an aspect ratio of 1:175. Influence of beam quality To determine the influence of laser beam quality in high aspect laser micro drilling, comparative drilling studies into AlN and Al 2 O 3 using a non-commercial 100 W double-rod Nd:YAG laser system (LMTB) [6] and [7]in multimode configuration were conducted. The MOPA-system achieves significant deeper and leaner holes at identical laser parameters, except for the difference in beam quality, which lies one order of magnitude apart (MOPA: M² = 2.3; double-rod: M² = 20.5).…”

“…Since the calculation of thermal lensing in the beam splitter has difficulty of axi-asymmetric temperature distribution, we took this effect into the simulation by assuming different thermal lensing between both arms. No compensative technique for wave-front distortion [19,20,21] was considered in this calculation. Figure 3 shows the results of the shot noise sensitivity calculated by using the FFT simulation.…”
