Investigation of the Inhibiting Role of Hydrogen in the Steam Reforming of Methanol

Abstract: Steam reforming of methanol (SRM) was investigated over palladium zinc oxide catalyst modified with chromium, copper supported on alumina modified manganese oxide and commercial copper catalyst supported on zinc oxide modified with alumina. These catalysts showed high activity and selectivity towards hydrogen and carbon dioxide at low reaction temperatures. Temperature‐programmed desorption, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier‐transform spectroscopy and catalytic performance studies, indicated that the presen… Show more

“…Nowadays the growing environmental issue and energy crisis due to the continuous consumption of fossil resources encourage scientists to seek clean alternative energy sources. , Hydrogen is promising to replace fossil fuels as one of the cleanest energy carriers . However, the intrinsic disadvantages of hydrogen (e.g., high risk of explosion and low volume energy density) hinder the commercialization process .…”

“…In recent years, great importance has been attached to the development of new energy sources due to fossil fuel depletion and environmental pollution. [1][2][3] Among all alternative energy sources, hydrogen has drawn attention as a potential clean energy to replace fossil fuels because of its higher energy density per unit mass and environmental advantages. 1,4,5 It is well known that the best way to utilize hydrogen is the fuel cell, which can be used as a power source for all kinds of vehicles, and the ideal power source for fixed power stations and portable electronic products.…”

“…DME hydrolysis to methanol (Eqn (1)) and the steam reforming of methanol to hydrogen and CO 2 (SRM) (Eqn (2)). The overall SRD can be represented as Eqn (3). Moreover, non-desirable side reactions such as reverse water gas shift reaction (RWGS), DME cracking, methanation, DME to hydrocarbon reaction (DTH) and methanol to hydrocarbon reaction (MTH) (Eqns ( 4)-( 8)) can also occur, which would depend on the reaction conditions and the catalyst.…”
