a b s t r a c tIn this paper, both time and frequency domain approaches are applied to a corrugated, curved, ballasted track section located in the RER commuter rail network in Paris. From the railhead profile measurements, two corrugation wavelengths are identified on the low rail. The wavelength fixing mechanisms are found to correlate to a resonance of the concrete sleepers and a resonance of the unsprung mass of the vehicle on the track stiffness. Corrugation growth rates are established from both approaches and compared. Then, an extensive parameter study is performed in order to evaluate the relevance of various parameters and to identify viable solutions for mitigating the observed corrugation. Specifically we examine the impact on rail corrugation due to the following track parameters: the vertical and lateral rail pad stiffness, the sleeper mass and the superelevation.

Rail corrugation increases life cycle cost of both track and vehicle and is one of the main reasons of track and vehicle defects. To address this problem, this paper explores the effect of rail corrugation on track response. A Finite Element model developed to consider vehicle and track characteristics. Vehicle is a 10 degree of freedom mass-spring-dashpot model which can simulate vertical displacements and rotations. Rail is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam with two degrees of freedom at each node which lies on discrete support to simulate sleeper and fastening system support. The total train-track matrices of mass, damping and stiffness have been formed. Solving the differential equations of motion in time domain for each time step results the response of track to train dynamic forces. A sensitivity analysis has been performed to explore the effect of different train and track parameters on rail displacement. The results of analyses show the effect of corrugation depth and wavelength as well as train speed and axle load on rail deflections and demonstrate the importance of each parameter in the studied range.

Torsional vibrations of metro wheel sets are known to be involved in the wavelength-fixing mechanism of the rutting-type rail corrugation. In the first part of this paper, the basic conditions for this type of wear to appear are established using a theory developed in the frequency domain. The efficiency of a dynamic vibration absorber tuned to the first torsional resonance of the wheel set to mitigate rutting corrugation is evaluated numerically. In the second part, the phenomenon is studied on a quarter-scale test bench. The scaling laws for wheel-roller wear predictions are established. The efficiency of the dynamic vibration absorber is evaluated on the scaled bench. The results are compared with theoretical predictions from a linear model. Additionally, the measurements are compared with numerical results from a multi-body model portraying the experiment.
