Investigation of the influence of varying tumbling strategies on a tumbling self-piercing riveting process

Abstract: The increasing demands for the reduction of carbon dioxide emission require intensified efforts to increase resource efficiency. Especially in the mobility sector with large moving masses, resource savings can contribute enormously to the reduction of emissions. One possibility is to reduce the weight of the vehicles by using lightweight technologies. A frequently used method is the implementation of multi-material systems. These consist of dissimilar materials such as steel, aluminium or plastics. In the prod… Show more

“…Furthermore, continuous cracks can be seen in the rivet shanks of the rivets joined with α = 6° in all three replicate tests. These cracks have already occurred in previous investigations of multi-material systems with a dual-phase steel on the punch side and an aluminum on the die side and result from different causes, which are described in [5], such as among others the increased load that is connected to the higher surface pressure compared to α = 3°.…”

“…Consequently, versatile joining processes are required that can be adapted during the production process in a short time in order to be able to manufacture multi-material systems. To increase the versatility of the SPR, a tumbling kinematic is applied to the punch in [5] as shown in Figure 1. The figure shows the process steps and components of the tumbling self-piercing IOP Publishing doi:10.1088/1757-899X/1270/1/012124 2 riveting process with the inserted tumbling punch.…”

“…In order to increase the potential for influencing the process and to improve material flow control, the conventional semi-tubular self-piercing riveting process is superimposed by tumbling kinematics of the punch. 1 A schematic representation of the process combination is shown in Figure 3.…”

“…The European Green Deal of 2020 includes a wide range of measures to reduce CO2 emissions in the European Union by 55% until 2030 compared to 1990. 1,2 An important part of the agenda to achieve this objective is to increase resource efficiency up to a zero-pollutant target. This goal requires changes in social and economic life and necessitates research activities to improve resource efficiency.…”

“…When increasing this angle, compared to the angle of the conical punch α, the contact area is reduced locally and is wandering on top of the workpiece surface on the outer edge, thus initiating a backward radial material flow as a result of compressive stresses in the sheet plane [17]. Furthermore, orbital forming is investigated in combination with a semi-tubular selfpiercing riveting process in order to increase the material flow control during joining [26]. In conclusion, the orbital forming process is qualified to manufacture specimens with a local material pre-distribution [20].…”
