Investigation of the Impact of Cell Cycle Stage on Freeze Response Sensitivity of Androgen-Insensitive Prostate Cancer

Abstract: Although initial results suggested a potential sensitivity, PC-3 cells exposed to freezing as sorted populations did not reveal significant differences in cell death. As such, the data from this study suggest that there is no difference in cell cycle stage sensitivity to freezing injury.

“…This highlights the importance of first-line treatments that address a multitude of cancer’s adaptive mechanisms [ 25 ]. Adjunctive therapies utilizing freezing show great potential as a multifaceted approach [ 25 ], especially given that cryotherapy is non-selective for cell cycle stage [ 98 ], in contrast to RFA. Another major benefit to cryoablation is that it has been shown to launch a secondary immune response attacking metastatic disease [ 10 , 25 , 28 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 , 104 ].…”

“…Temperature of the cancer area will be dropped below the freezing point owing to the injection of the liquid nitrogen. After the therapy, the temperature of that area returns to the normal temperature, however the normal cells on that area could survive [1,2]. Surviving of the normal cells at the extreme cold temperature motivate us to investigate the behavior of the cells at this kind of temperature.…”
