Investigation of the effects of bolt diameter and end-plate thickness on the capacity and failure modes of end-plated beam-to-column connections

Abstract: End-plated connections are frequently preferred in beam-to-column connections due to their advantages of high quality and fast assembly. The capacity of the end-plated connections depends on many parameters including the thickness of end-plate and bolt diameter. A comprehensive numerical parametric study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of these parameters on the capacity of the end-plated connections using the finite element tool, ABAQUS. The results of the numerical study were compared with … Show more

“…Changing from steel to cast iron over aluminum members caused a 7.8, 7.6, and 7.4-percent decrease in bolt stiffness [128]. According to the findings of others, the initial stiffness of the endplated connection improves along with an increase in either the bolt diameter or the end-thickness [129].…”

“…In keeping with this discovery, Asada et al [82] described a method for increasing the plasticity of welded wide flange beam to column connections by using high-yield bolts and welding complementary H-section haunches. Ozkilic [44][45][46][47] evaluated behavior of stiffened extended end-plate connections with large bolts, application of extended end-plate connections for replaceable shear links, effects of yield line mechanisms of four bolted extended end-plate connections on frame response, and impacts of bolt diameter and end-plate thickness on capacity of connection and failure modes under cyclic and monotonic loading.…”
