Investigation of the Correlation between Total Blood Potassium Concentration and Hematocrit

Abstract: The correlation between whole blood potassium concentration (Kt) and hematocrit (Ht) was investigated in subjects with a broad range of Ht. This relationship was found to be represented by a curve, and its form was derived by the manipulation of the formula concerning the inverse correlation between Ht and erythrocyte potassium concentration (Kc).

“…While the whole blood potassium concentration can be accurately predicted from the subject's Ht value, the plas matic potassium concentration being small compared to the whole blood potassium concentration, as shown in our previous investigation [2,3], the range of MgP. especially in dialyzed patients, can significantly affect the magnitude of MgT, and this, therefore, can be correctly calculated by the formula which expresses MgT in terms of MgP and Ht.…”

“…For this purpose, the same procedure used for the investigation between whole blood potassium concentration and Ht [2][3][4] has been followed. By com bining the formula concerning the inverse correlation be tween MgC and Ht [I]: MgC = a -bHt (I) and the standard one [5]:…”

“…The aim of the present work was to investigated the relationship between Kt and Ht in uremics on chronic dia lysis, and to test the prediction of Kt from Ht in view of the fact that the range of Kp in these patients is wider than that of the previous studied subjects [2].…”

“…As matter of fact our recent find ings [2] showed in healthy persons and nonuremic anemics that the relationship between Kt and Ht was represented by a curve which was expressed by the following formula: Kt = 3.73 + 112.63Ht -59.27Ht-. Using this equation the Kt was accurately calculated directly from the patient's Ht value, and the small range of plasma K concentration (Kp) did not affect the prediction power of the above equation.…”
