Investigation of the cerebral blood flow of an Omani man with supposed ‘spirit possession’ associated with an altered mental state : a case report

Abstract: IntroductionThe view that spirits may possess humans is found in 90% of the world population, including Arab/Islamic societies. Despite the association between possessive states and various neurological and psychiatric disorders, the available literature has yet to correlate possessive states with functional brain imaging modalities such as single-photon-emission computed tomography.Case presentationThis paper describes the clinical case of a 22-year-old male Omani patient who presented to us with an altered s… Show more

“…The selected studies were published between 1994 and 2013 with the majority after 2003 and differed in study design, sample size, methods, assessment instruments, locations, and research questions (see Table 1 ). Four studies were case reports (Guenedi et al, 2009 ; Hale & Pinninti, 1994 ; Khan & Sahni, 2013 ; Szabo, Jonsson, & Vorster, 2005 ) presenting single individuals with spirit possession. Four other articles were case reports presenting 2–10 patients (Brewster et al, 2012 ; Castillo, 1994 ; Pereira et al, 1995 ; Schieffelin, 1996 ).…”

“…Communication theory suggests that the possession phenomenon serves as a way for the oppressed and the marginalized to express their inner difficulties and problems when the political or cultural situation may not have allowed them to express their discontent directly. Furthermore, one article debated the possibility of neurobiological reasons, related to an accidental brain injury (Guenedi et al, 2009 ), while another author considered high altitude sickness as an underlying factor (Khan & Sahni, 2013 ).…”

“…Due to the lack of direction in past literature, we agreed that the present case series from Oman would t the criteria of a manic episode, unspeci ed (F309) or brief psychotic disorder (F24) since our hospital codes all diagnoses using the ICD-10. In a traditional society such as Oman, something akin to delirium, mania or mutism symptoms is likely to be attributed to spirit possession (Guenedi et al, 2009) or lunar cycles. The fact that most cases appear to be amnesic to their altered state further cements the ideas of an incarnating spirit being the main culprit and its monthly occurrence appears to echo the role of lunar cycles (Guenedi et al, 2009).…”
