Investigation of the atrial electromechanical delay duration in Behcet patients by tissue Doppler echocardiography

Abstract: Atrial electromechanical conduction times were increased in the BD patients compared with those in the controls. The tendency of BD patients to go into AF can be easily and non-invasively detected using tissue Doppler echocardiography. These findings may be indicators for subclinical cardiac involvement.

“…compared the atrial conduction times measured by electrophysiolgical methods and tissue Doppler echocardiography, and reported that TDI could be used to evaluate atrial conduction times. Earlier studies revealed that atrial EMD obtained by this method was prolonged in various diseases such as type 1 DM, Behcet disease, familial Mediterranean fever, ankylosing spondylitis, scleroderma, and hypothyroidism …”

“…Prevalence of cardiovascular involvement in BD has been reported as 7-29% [3]. Different cardiovascular manifestations such as acute myocardial infarction, endocarditis, myocarditis, pericarditis, valvular diseases, dilated cardiomyopathy, conduction system disturbances, and ventricular arrhythmias have been reported [5], albeit rarely. “…Aktürk et al (21) found that LA mechanical functions and volumes were impaired in BD who have no clinical evidence for cardiovascular disease. In a study of Karabağ et al (22) atrial electromechanical delay (EMD) duration, a non-invasive predictor of AF, were investigated in patients with BD and interatrial and intra-atrial EMD found to be increased in patients with BD compared with the control group.…”
