Investigation of the Anti-Prostate Cancer Properties of Marine-Derived Compounds

Abstract: This review focuses on marine compounds with anti-prostate cancer properties. Marine species are unique and have great potential for the discovery of anticancer drugs. Marine sources are taxonomically diverse and include bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi, algae, and mangroves. Marine-derived compounds, including nucleotides, amides, quinones, polyethers, and peptides are biologically active compounds isolated from marine organisms such as sponges, ascidians, gorgonians, soft corals, and bryozoans, including those… Show more

“…Research into the anticancer properties of natural compounds is a rapidly growing area of science. Many different classes of natural compounds have demonstrated anticancer properties including many plant-based and marine-based extracts [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. ASX is a marine-based ketocarotenoid that has potent antioxidant characteristics [ 3 ].…”

“…Haematococcuspluvialis is also a rich source of carotenoid. Astaxanthin (3,3′-dihydroxy-β, β′-carotene-4,4′-dione) a xanthophyll carotenoid has demonstrated antioxidants properties and efficient promotion of apoptosis in prostate cancer cell lines by inhibiting NF-kappa B [143]. Siphonaxanthin is a specific keto-carotenoid of siphonaceous green algae.…”

“…Marine soft corals are rich in biologically-active substances, and have been shown to exert anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-cancer, and cytotoxic activities [7,8,9,10]. Cembrane -type diterpene are common secondary metabolites of marine and terrestrial organisms, and cytotoxicity is one of the major characteristics of compounds of this type [11,12,13].…”
