A AB BS ST TR RA AC CT T O Ob bj je ec ct ti iv ve e: : The inflammation and the following fibrosis due to the bacterial colonization are thought to be the principle underlying mechanism in the development of nasolacrimal duct stenosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of biofilms in the lacrimal sac mucosa of the patients with dacryostenosis. M Ma at te er ri ia al l a an nd d M Me et th ho od ds s: : This study included 15 patients with a symptom of epiphora for at least 3 months and documented dacryostenosis with a dacryocystography. Lacrimal sac mucosal specimens obtained during endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) were examined for the presence of biofilm formation under the scanning electron microscope. R Re es su ul lt ts s: : The specimens were obtained from 15 patients. The mean age of 12 female and 3 male patients was 54 years. Epiphora was the main symptom and its average duration was 18 (6-36) months. We could not analyze specimen in 1 patient. We detected biofilm formation in 12 of 14 (% 85.7) specimens. Biofilm formation was dense in 5 specimens and light in 7 specimens. C Co on nc cl lu us si io on n: : This is the first article that documents the presence of bacterial biofilms on the lacrimal sac mucosa in the patients with dacryostenosis. This study shows the presence of biofilms in cases with dacryostenosis and interrogates its role in the etiology of chronic dacryocystitis similar to other chronic infections. Further investigations on this subject should be carried on in larger and controlled series to assure the role of biofilms in the etiology of chronic infections. New studies should also investigate whether the biofilm formation is the reason or the result of chronic infections. Biofilms have been shown to play an important role in otolaryngologic disorders. Recent advances have demonstrated that there are different bacterial species within the biofilms in different disease states. Since the recognition that chronic otolaryngologic infections are associated with biofilms, new treatment strategies with new agents have been trying to be developed for antibiotic-resistant bacterial biofilms. It has been well known that inadequate doses of antibiotic treatment can trigger biofilm formation and can lead to chronic infections. In fact, to diagnose, treat and prevent biofilm-related illnesses, different strategies are required. Determining the bacterial genetics of biofilm formation and the interaction between host and bacteria will provide substantial targets for biofilm drug therapies. The main goal of this review is to evaluate and discuss in detail some of the recent findings in biofilms-related otolaryngologic states. (JAREM 2013; 3: 1-4) Key Words: Biofilm, otolaryngology ÖZETBiofilmlerin otolarengolojik hastalıklarda önemli bir rolü olduğu gösterilmiştir. Yakın zamanda yapılan çalışmalarda farklı hastalık durumlarında biofilmlerin içinde farklı mikroorganizma türlerinin bulunduğu saptanmıştır. Kronik otolarengolojik infeksiyonların biofilmler ile ilişkili olduğu anlaşıldıktan sonra, özellikle antibiyotiklere dirençli olduğu bilinen bakteriyel biofilmler için yeni ajanları içeren tedavi stratejilerinin geliştirilmesine çalışılmaktadır. Uygun olmayan dozlarda antibiyotik tedavisi biofilm oluşumunu ve kronik enfeksiyonların gelişimini tetikleyebilir. Biofilmler ile ilişkili hastalıkların tanısı, tedavisi ve önlenmesi için farklı stratejilere gereksinim vardır. Biofilm oluşumunun bakteriyel genetik alt yapısının saptanması ve konak ile bakteri arasındaki etkileşimin anlaşılması, biofilme bağlı enfeksiyonların tedavisi için doğru hedeflerin belirlenmesini sağlayacaktır. Bu derlemenin esas amacı biofilm ile ilişkili otolarengolojik hastalıklardaki yeni gelişmelerin detaylı bir şekilde tartışılarak değerlendirilmesidir. The antimicrobial activity of different reverse micelles on microorganisms is been compared using the disc diffusion method. The bis (2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelle showed a more significant inhibitory effect than do other reverse. micelles, and it had an antimicrobial activity against a broad range of microorganisms. Results from an antimicrobial activity test of isooctane and a forward extraction containing soybean protein suggest that the surfactant was chiefly responsible for inhibiting microbes in AOTyisooctane reverse micelle, while isooctane hardly inhibited the microbial growth. The properties of S. aureus, cultured in the TSB with AOT reverse micellar solution, were identified by the SEM and SDS-PAGE fingerprinting of cell-wall proteins. It is concluded that the cellwall of the S. aureus decreased in the TSB with AOT reverse micellar solution, and some cell protein subunits of the S. aureus did not occurr, especially between 14.4 and 42.7 kDa, while one new protein subunit at near 97.4 kDa occurred.
