Investigation of Spontaneous Imbibition by Using a Surfactant-Free Active Silica Water-Based Nanofluid for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Abstract: Interests in using nanofluids for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) applications has been increasing. Herein, a novel surfactant-free water-based nanofluid for EOR was constructed using active silica nanoparticles. Active silica nanoparticles were synthesized via condensation of hexanedioic acid with the −OH group of silica. Water-based nanofluid was obtained by transforming carboxyl into carboxylate on the surface of active silica nanoparticles in water. The particle size of the active silica nanoparticles in water… Show more

“…12 illustrates the measured values of contact angles of the various aqueous systems. Initially, the contact angle of the system was measured without the presence of the synthesised NCs, which was 134°t hat indicates a strong oil-wet system [42][43][44][45][46][47]. Afterwards, the effect of the synthesised NCs on the wettability alteration was investigated by measuring the contact angle of different crude oil/ nanofluids systems.…”

“…In addition to thermal conductivity, the electrical conductivity of the NF is also measured for different volume fractions at different temperatures. Many studies have been conducted on the preparation of SiO 2 NF [ 22 , 23 ]. Yan et al studied the thermophysical characteristic of SiO 2 /water NF and its heat transfer enhancement with the field synergy principle [ 24 ].…”

“…7 Besides, the weak viscoelasticity and mechanical strength of small-molecule surfactant foams make them easily ruptured under external shear stress during formation. [8][9][10] Considering the above problems, many researchers have added polymers with good viscosifying and thickening properties to the foaming solution to improve the foam stability and viscoelasticity. Nowadays, the commonly used polymer stabilizers can be divided into two types, namely, hydrophilic polymers (such as polyacrylamide, 11 xanthan gum 4,9 and guar gum 12 ) and amphiphilic copolymers (hydrophobically modied polyacrylamide, such as B192 (ref.…”
