Vegetable oils are very promising alternatives to fossil lubricants due to their abundance, low cost, excellent performance, and environmental friendliness. Due to its multifunctional structure, castor oil is an excellent precursor in the synthesis of new biolubricants. However, it showed poor thermal-oxidative stability and a higher pour point. This study used castor oil fatty acids prepared by transesterification (EHRO), epoxidation (TEPO), and oxirane ring opening with the aromatic amines aniline (ANIL) and p-anisidine (ANIS). The chemical structure of these oils was verified by 1 H and 13 C NMR analysis, and mass spectrometry. Measurements show that the presence of an aromatic amine increases the viscosity resulting in 172 (ANIL) and 199 (ANIS) cSt at 40 C, but reduces viscosity index to 16 and 1, respectively. In addition, the amine groups can scavenge radicals increasing their thermal and oxidative stability. These products do not oxidize copper, and tribological analysis reveals that ANIS has the lowest torque with wear equivalent to commercial mineral lubricant NH-140. The present work is a comparative evaluation of physicochemical, rheological, thermal, and tribological properties of Thevetia Peruviana oil (TPO) as bio-lubricant. The tribological properties were investigated by a four-ball tribo-tester according to ASTM 4172-94 and ASTM D2783 standard. The corresponding results were compared with sunflower oil, jatropha oil, SAE 20W-40 and ISO VG 46. The acid value, pour point and flash point of TPO were found to be 1.383± 0.015 mg KOH, -4 ±0.231℃ and 344±0.04℃ respectively. The viscosity index of TPO is 235.59 with viscosities 31.76 mm 2 /s at 40℃ and 7.89 mm 2 /s at 100℃. The oxidation onset temperature of TPO having a value of 282.20℃ is comparable to SAE 20W-40 but higher than that of ISO VG 46. The results obtained from tribological test show that TPO has low coefficient of friction 0.0496±0.001 with wear scar diameter 0.462±0.001 mm. Despite the low pour point temperature, TPO are comparable to commercial lubricants, which prove its suitability as bio-lubricant base-stock based on physicochemical, thermal, tribological properties, and high viscosity index.

Castor seed oil, as an important biomass fuel, has attracted extensive attention worldwide due to inclusive applications. Castor seed screw mechanical extraction is in fact seed shear damage and oil output. Seed shearing mechanism has been investigated with a developed tribometer. Influences of pressing load, shearing speed, roller roughness were analyzed. Castor seed structural damage was in‐situ observed with optical microscope, and in‐depth analyzed with Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. The results reveal that shear interaction can be divided into three stages: coat damage, transition shearing and endosperm oil output. Seed shear mechanism includes coat peeling, endosperm plowing, tissue transferring and oil lubrication. High pressing load leads to more damage of coat and endosperm, causing more oil to flow out. With shearing speed increasing, coat is easily peeled, obvious endosperm shear plowing and oil lubrication happened in contact area. Coat damage by high roughness leads more oil output. Castor oil enters the contact area and work as lubricant, leading to the decrease of friction resistance.
