Investigation of optical limiting based on the combination of stimulated Brillouin scattering and carbon nanotube/HT-270 suspension

Abstract: In order to improve the optical limiting performance based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), a combination of SBS and carbon nanotube/HT-270 suspension for optical limiting is proposed in this paper. The dependence of output energy of optical limiting based on this hybrid approach on the pump energy is numerically simulated, and validated in Continuum's Nd: YAG seed-injected laser. The results indicate that the output energy based on this hybrid approach shows much better performance compared with that… Show more

“…Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has received general attention owing to its broad applications such as beam combination (Kong et al, 2008(Kong et al, , 2009aWang et al, 2009aWang et al, , 2009bOstermeyer et al, 2008), Brillouin amplification of weak signals (Gao et al, 2009;Lu et al, 2009), optical limiting for laser protection in high-power laser (Hasi et al, 2009b(Hasi et al, , 2009c, and slow light in optical fiber (Kovalev et al, 2009;Lu et al, 2007). Among the parameters that characterize SBS, the threshold value is of great importance.…”

“…Optical limiting based on SBS is first proposed by Lu et al (2003), which exhibits the performances of high optical limiting threshold, fast response speed, and high damage threshold, thereby particularly suitable for providing safe protection for high power laser system from the exposure of a high input power density. To solve the problem, methods based on double SBS optical limiting and single SBS optical limiting following a nonlinear material optical limiting are proposed by Hasi et al (2009aHasi et al ( , 2009bHasi et al ( , 2011, however, these experimental setups are complicated for the practical application of optical limiting.
