Investigation of Oil Spills from Oil Tankers through Grey Theory: Events from 1974 to 2016

Abstract: An oil spill from a vessel is a critical maritime accident that can severely damage the environment. In this study; we utilize the basic construction of grey relational analysis to explore oil spill events statistics from 1974 to 2015 and successfully analyze the causes of incidents in 2016. The results illustrate that grey relational analysis effectively identifies the factors causing oil spills with an accuracy of over 96%. The research is aimed to reduce the marine accidents and predict the cause of oil spi… Show more

“…Assessing oil spills from tankers using real data from the past, the most significant factors or types of accidents found were collision, grounding, equipment failure, fire and explosion and ship sinking [54]. Maritime accidents are normally classified according to and attributed to their primary causal factors, which are referred to as called first event.…”

“…Among the 13 factors, improper lookout and improper ship handling were found to be the most unsafe factors, whereas improper routing plan and failure to fix were the least unsafe. Su et al [10] performed GRA to rank the types of oil spill accidents from oil tankers. Yu and Wu [11] found nine factors that influenced the development of the tourism industry the most in the Guangdong province of China.…”

“…1,21 Compared to 2D membrane materials, 3D porous adsorbents are promising candidates for oil−water separation because of their high porosity, abundant interconnected channels, and easy, costeffective operation. 6,15,22−24 Recently, aerogels have attracted significance attention in the fields of oil−water separation and thermal insulation because of their extremely low density (0.003−0.5 g/cm 3 ), high porosity (80−99.8%), and large specific surface area (500− 1200 m 2 /g). 25−27 Nevertheless, traditional inorganic aerogels with pearl-necklace-like network structures, such as SiO 2 or Al 2 O 3 aerogels, 28,29 cannot be used for these purposes because of their high brittleness 30 and weak mechanical strength.…”
