The chapter is an update of one published in 2009, covering the literature up to the autumn of 2014. Due to space limitations assigned to chapters in this book, the review of analytical methods was divided into two parts, the companion of this chapter dealing with electrochemical methods of analysis and the present one dealing with all the rest, especially spectrophotometric and optical methods. The same guidelines as in the older chapter were followed for the selection of analytical methods, namely: A section dealing with detection and determination of specific metal enolates, a section dealing with conversion of metal cation analytes into complexes with enolic ligands before end analysis and a section presenting the use of certain metal enolates as analytical aids and tools.

In enantioselective gas chromatography (enantio‐GC), the chiral stationary phases (CSPs) are coated on deactivated capillary columns in bulk as nonvolatile liquids or as solution in a conventional achiral stationary phase (squalane, polyethylene glycol, and various polysiloxanes). In Chirasil‐type CSPs, the chiral selector is chemically bonded to a polysiloxane backbone and thermally immobilized on the capillary inner surface. Three different approaches of mixed binary selector systems in enantio‐GC have been described in this chapter. The separation of enantiomers on chiral nonracemic selectors by enantio‐GC is entirely governed by thermodynamics. It is brought about by the fast and reversible formation of transient and energetically distinct diastereomeric association complexes (DD′ and LD′) between the select and enantiomers (arbitrarily denoted D and L) and the enantiopure selector (arbitrarily denoted D′). The chapter ends with a note on the mechanisms of chirality recognition.

The main goal of this review is to provide an overview of the trends in the technological development of complexation gas chromatography. This kind of chromatography, despite the passage of years, continues to offer new opportunities. The authors would like to show how complexation gas chromatography evolved over the years, due to the variety of stationary phases with complexation properties, their ability to separate, very specifically, the structures of the molecules and chemical compounds, improving the quality of the obtained results, and continuously lowering the detection limits of the analysed compounds in very complex matrices, including environmental and medical samples. The work is dedicated to the memory of Professor E. Gil‐Av, whose scientific achievements were the inspiration for the improvement and widening of the research on the use of complexing metal ions and coordination metal compounds for selective separation in gas chromatography.
