Investigation of nonlinear effects in glassy matter using dielectric methods

Abstract: Abstract. We summarize current developments in the investigation of glassy matter using nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy. This work also provides a brief introduction into the phenomenology of the linear dielectric response of glassforming materials and discusses the main mechanisms that can give rise to nonlinear dielectric response in this material class. Here we mainly concentrate on measurements of the conventional dielectric permittivity at high fields and the higher-order susceptibilities characterizing… Show more

“…The fundamental frequency fully dominates the response behavior in a linear way. This is in accordance to results obtained by dielectric spectroscopy (DES)-measurements [147,116,118,84]. In the case of emerging nonlinearity under high eld excitation, the highest response amplitudes are observed at rst and third harmonic frequency.…”

“…Thus, the temperature dependence as well as the reducing eect on the compliance of the third harmonic contribution is of comparable nature in case of LAOS-experiments. In dielectric spectroscopy the third harmonic coecient has an opposed eect on the susceptibility, as it enhances the response signal in the same way as the rst harmonic contribution [84]. For this reason, the origin of the third harmonic might also be of a dierent kind for DES and DMA-experiments.…”

“…The leading higher-harmonic contributions in large amplitude oscillatory shearing in the dielectric susceptibility and the conductivity are measured experimentally as a function of the magnitude of the external field, which has to be controlled accurately. As one of the highlights reported here, the structure of the critical clusters at the thermodynamic glass transition could be revealed [9]. The dependence of the breakdown of linear response to the chosen external field variable for the different experimental protocols needs careful consideration from the theoretical perspective as described in reference [3].…”

“…Therefore all manuscripts collected here relate to this issue. It has a particular importance for the experimental nonlinear spectroscopy performed using mechanical [1,2] and electrical fields [6,9]. The leading higher-harmonic contributions in large amplitude oscillatory shearing in the dielectric susceptibility and the conductivity are measured experimentally as a function of the magnitude of the external field, which has to be controlled accurately.…”
