The current study focused on investigating the gamma-ray shielding capacity of nano sized CeO2 (nCeO2) doped vinyl ester composites (VE/nCeO2) produced by the direct pouring method with different nCeO2 contents ranging from 2.5 to 20 wt%. X-ray Diffraction and Transmission Electron Microscopy were used to characterize the structural properties of nCeO2 particles. The gamma radiation shielding performance of the produced composites was investigated experimentally and theoretically within the scope of primary shielding coefficients like mass attenuation coefficient, half value layer, tenth value layer, mean free path, effective atomic number, and effective electron density. The experimental studies were obtained by NaI(Tl) scintillator detector for gamma-ray energies coming from Ba-133, Cs-137, and Co-60 radioactive point sources in the narrow beam geometry. The outcomes were compared with the theoretical calculations acquired by Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport version 6 code. The effective atomic number and effective electron density studies were additionally examined with WinXCom software. A good consistency between the experimental and theoretical outcomes was achieved. It was determined that among all composites, VE/20%nCeO2 composite having maximum nCeO2 content showed the best radiation shielding performance against all energy values. The nCeO2 additive was successful in enhancing the radiation attenuation performance of vinyl ester, and mass attenuation coefficients of investigated samples gradually changed from 0.15 to 0.79 cm2/g at 81 keV. The gamma-ray attenuation coefficients of the composites were compared with traditional shield materials and previously studied shielding materials and evaluated as promising lightweight, non-toxic alternatives for the low-energy gamma-ray shielding applications.

This article presents data collected by measurements of lead (Pb) and iron (Fe) and their combination as heavy shielding materials. Measurements were performed using gamma photon energies of 662, 1173, and 1332keV for the Cs-137 and Co-60 sources. The theoretical data part was calculated using WinXCom, Phy-X, and Py-MLUBF software packages. Tables and graphs of the photon Mass Attenuation Coefficient (MAC), Linear Attenuation Coefficient (LAC), Half Value Layer (HVL), Tenth Value Layer (TVL) and Mean Free Path (MFP) are presented for both heavy metals and their combination to study the shielding properties experimentally and theoretically. The results will contribute to the ongoing research as a database for future use.

Estimating Radiation Shielding of Fired Clay Bricks Using ANN and GEP Approaches

This study aimed to determine how radiation attenuation would change when the thickness, density, and compressive strength of clay bricks, modified with partial replacement of clay by fly ash, iron slag, and wood ash. To conduct this investigation, four distinct types of bricks—normal, fly ash-, iron slag-, and wood ash-incorporated bricks were prepared by replacing clay content with their variable percentages. Additionally, models for predicting the radiation-shielding ability of bricks were created using gene expression programming (GEP) and artificial neural networks (ANN). The addition of iron slag improved the density and compressive strength of bricks, thus increasing shielding capability against gamma radiation. In contrast, fly ash and wood ash decreased the density and compressive strength of burnt clay bricks, leading to low radiation shielding capability. Concerning the performance of the Artificial Intelligence models, the root mean square error (RMSE) was determined as 0.1166 and 0.1876 nC for the training and validation data of ANN, respectively. The training set values for the GEP model manifested an RMSE equal to 0.2949 nC, whereas the validation data produced RMSE = 0.3507 nC. According to the statistical analysis, the generated models showed strong concordance between experimental and projected findings. The ANN model, in contrast, outperformed the GEP model in terms of accuracy, producing the lowest values of RMSE. Moreover, the variables contributing towards shielding characteristics of bricks were studied using parametric and sensitivity analyses, which showed that the thickness and density of bricks are the most influential parameters. In addition, the mathematical equation generated from the GEP model denotes its significance such that it can be used to estimate the radiation shielding of burnt clay bricks in the future with ease.
