Nanomaterials’ Influence on the Performance of Thermal Insulating Mortars—A Statistical Analysis

This research provides a statistical analysis of the mechanical and physical properties of thermal insulating mortars developed in the laboratory and by the industry with and without the incorporation of nanomaterials. This was evaluated by carrying out a uni and bivariate analysis, principal components and factor analysis, cluster analysis, and the application of regression models. The results show that it is possible to find associations between these mortars’ properties, but also how these formulations’ development can be approached in the future to achieve better overall performance. They also show that the use of nanomaterials, namely silica aerogel, significantly improved the mortars’ thermal insulation capabilities, allowing us to obtain mortar formulations with thermal conductivities below the values presented by classic thermal insulating materials. Therefore, with this investigation, other researchers can support their product-development choices when incorporating nanomaterials to reduce mortars’ thermal conductivities, increasing their production efficiency, overall multifunctionality, and sustainability.

Interactive verification of construction works should provide for compliance between planned vs. completed works. The task of its fulfilment (especially for larger investment projects) is rather time and labor consuming. There is potential to reduce the duration of a verification process as well as to ensure the results are more accurate and clear with the use of digital tools and specialized software, moreover, substantial part of the process may be automated. Faster and more accurate capturing of a data regarding actual position and shape of the construction works, resp. its parts, as well as the information about the quality of works has the potential to reduce number of disputes caused by unclear measurement data evaluation. The technology of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) is suitable for this purpose allowing efficient data collection and automation of the process of verification. The article provides a case study comparing traditional approach vs. use of TLS for earthworks verification and the impact of different methods of measurement on the price.

Lightweight concrete is a very useful building material used in the construction sector for providing better insulation and lower energy consumption. Properties of lightweight aggregate, water-cement ratio, and other additives strongly affect the concrete strength, thermal properties, and workability. This paper investigates the behavior of lightweight concrete using rubber particles as fine aggregate, replaced by the expanded glass lightweight aggregate in the concrete mixture. In the concrete mixture expanded glass aggregate is replaced by rubber particles by 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% by mass. Concrete workability, density, compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption tests were examined. Workability and density were increasing by increasing rubber particles replacement percentages in the concrete mixture. On the other hand, compressive strength and flexural strength were decreasing by higher percentages of rubber particles replacement. Strength properties of rubberized concrete can be balanced by the proper utilization of binding materials in the concrete. Rubberized concrete can be used in the construction sector efficiently as partial replacement of lightweight aggregate in the concrete mixture.
