The aim of this work was the production and characterization of binary, ternary and quaternary complexes based on β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and Lippia sidoides essential oil (EO). OE:β-CD formulations at proportions of 1:10 to 2:10 (binary); added with surfactant or polymer (ternary) or with both (quaternary) were prepared and submitted to spray drying at optimized operating conditions (inlet gas temperature: 160 °C, drying gas flow rate: 60 m 3 /h; feed flow rate: 4 g/min; pressure and flow rate of the atomizing air: 2.5 kgf/cm 2 and 17 lpm). The responses evaluated were the encapsulation efficiency (EE), powder properties, product morphology, and process efficiency (REC). The results showed that the addition of polymer and surfactant to β-CD, generating ternary and quaternary complexes improved the encapsulation efficiency, drying yield, and modify the particles morphology. Samples with lower EO: β-CD ratio (1:10) showed high encapsulation efficiency.Keywords: inclusion complex, Lippia sidoides, essential oil, spray drying. INTRODUÇÃOLippia sidoides popularmente conhecida como alecrim pimenta ou estrepa cavalo, é uma espécie vegetal com comprovadas propriedades fungicidas, bactericidas e larvicidas, devido ao elevador teor de óleo essencial ricos em timol e carvacrol (Figura 1).1 O óleo essencial extraído desta espécie é amplamente utilizado na medicina tradicional, como agente antisséptico e anti-infeccioso, principalmente no tratamento de afecções da boca, garganta, gastrenterite, pele e do couro cabeludo, como antifúngica, repelente de insetos, anti-hipertensiva e antiespasmódica. 2,3 Atualmente, produtos derivados de plantas vêm sendo amplamente explorado pelas indústrias farmacêutica, cosmética, alimentícia e veterinária. A diversidade de compostos vegetais e seus efeitos biológicos comprovados têm contribuído fortemente para o crescente interesse em produtos derivados de plantas. Em geral, a atividade biológica destes produtos está associada à presença de compostos denominados de fitoquímicos, que são metabólitos secundários sintetizados pelas plantas, sendo classificados em diversas classes, como por exemplo, os carotenoides, alcaloides, polifenóis, terpenos, esteróis, saponinas, compostos contendo nitrogênio e enxofre. 4 Neste sentido, se destacam os óleos essenciais (OE), que são misturas químicas complexas, compostas por monoterpenos, triterpenos e sesquiterpenos.5,6 São compostos voláteis e odoríferos sensíveis à luz, calor e oxigênio, e produzidos a partir do metabolismo secundário de plantas. Possuem comprovadas propriedades antimicrobianas, inseticida, antiviral e antioxidante. Abstract. Mentha spicata L. var. viridis oil (MVO) is a potent antifungal agent, but its application in the topical treatment is limited due to its irritancy and volatility. It was aimed to develop more efficient, chitosan-incrusted MVO microspheres with reduced volatility and lesser irritancy and to dispense it in the form of ointment. Simple coacervation technique was employed to microencapsulate MVO in chitosan matrix. Morphological properties and polymer cross-linking were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Optimization was carried out on the basis of entrapment efficiency (EE) using response surface methodology. Well-designed microspheres having smooth surface and spherical shape were observed. EE (81.20%) of optimum batch (R21) was found at 1.62%w/v of cross-linker, 5.4:5 of MVO to chitosan ratio and at 1000 rpm. R21 showed 69.38±1.29% in vitro MVO release in 12 h and 96.92% retention of MVO in microspheres even after 8 week. Ointments of PEG 4000 and PEG 400 comprising MVO (F1) and R21 (F2) were developed separately. F2 showed comparatively broader zone of growth inhibition (13.33±1.76-18.67±0.88 mm) and less irritancy (PII 0.5833, irritation barely perceptible) than that of F1. F2 was able to avoid the direct contact of mild irritant MVO with the skin and to reduce its rapid volatility. Controlled release of MVO helped in lengthening the duration of availability of MVO in agar media and hence improved its therapeutic efficacy. In conclusion, a stable and non-irritant formulation with improved therapeutic potential was developed.

Thermal properties of linear citronellyl diesters were studied by TG/DSC/FTIR/QMS-coupled method in inert and oxidative atmospheres. The diesters decompose in one main step in inert atmosphere. As main pyrolysis products, the formation of mainly monoterpene hydrocarbons, acid anhydrides, monoacids, cyclic ketones, aldehyde fragments, carbon dioxide, and water was observed. It was indicated on the ester and O-citronellyl bonds cleavage, partial decarboxylation, and elimination of water from formed dicarboxylic acids during their pyrolysis. The decomposition in air runs in two steps. The first step was connected with the creation of monoterpene hydrocarbons, monoacids, cyclic ketones, aldehydes, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water. In the second step of decomposition, mainly carbon dioxide and water were produced. It was testified to ester and O-citronellyl bonds cleavage, partial oxygenation, and decarboxylation process of the primary formed decomposition products.
