Investigation of Hypertriglyceridemia in Small for Gestational Age Fetuses

Abstract: Plasma triglyceride, nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA), glycerol, insulin and blood glucose concentrations were measured in 32 small for gestational age (SGA) and 54 appropriate for gestational age fetuses. Although the values of plasma NEFA and glycerol concentrations were not different in the two groups, some SGA fetuses were hypertriglyceridemic, hypoglycemic and hypoinsulinemic. These findings suggest that hypertriglyceridemia in hypoxemic SGA fetuses is not due to lipolysis, nor to increased triglyceride sy… Show more

“…One band at 37 kDa was detected by Western blot for LPL. No significant differences were detected in LPL protein expression (18 Intralipid treatment. Cytotrophoblast cells incubated in 40 and 400 mg/dl Intralipid for 24 h showed a 28 -39% decrease in LPL activity compared with control (n ϭ 10 -14, P Ͻ 0.05, one-way ANOVA; Fig.…”

“…Cordocentesis data on fetal plasma from 18 to 36 weeks indicate an exponential fall in the concentration of circulating NEFA in the fetal circulation over this period (41), presumably because of the rapidly increasing fetal demand for fatty acids (Figure 4c). The concentration of NEFA in the maternal plasma at term is around three times that in the fetal circulation, but the concentration of albumin, its primary carrier protein, is actually 10%-20% higher in the fetal than in the maternal circulation (4).…”
